Rabid Raccoon Found in Windsor Prompting Health Warning

Windsor health officials warn pet owners after a raccoon suspected of rabies fought a dog in a carport. The animal was shot and later tested positive for rabies in Columbia. Rabies cases have risen statewide this year, with seven incidents reported, the furthest north yet. Veterinarians advise vaccination and confinement of pets and avoidance of rabid animals.

Montmorenci Avoids Water Shortage Crisis

Montmorenci-Couchton Water District nearly ran dry as a pump failed while a second unit faltered. Official Daniel D. Magness said the area was about 12 hours from running out of water and secured a quick repair with a Columbia firm. The district connected to an Aiken water line to restore supply.

Orangeburg Prisoners Escape

Orangeburg Calhoun Center officials report two inmates John R. Mims 18 and Charles Brown 23 escaped after cutting through a cell window with a hacksaw blade. The breakthrough occurred during a 6 am headcount Tuesday. the pair squeezed through a 14 by 14 inch opening. Mims is jailed for attempted housebreaking. Brown faces armed robbery burglary and marijuana charges.

Sherry Granade Honored by Club for Gallaudet Admission

Sherry Granade, a triple amputee, was praised by the Senior Men's Club for entering Gallaudet College in Washington D C to pursue a degree aiding those with hearing difficulties. The meeting at Ramada Inn featured guest Raymond Mizell of the S C Vocational Rehabilitation Department, who lauded local rehabilitation efforts and the Aiken workshop’s work with disabled clients. Connie Heider of the Lower Council on Governments is slated as guest speaker June 21.
