Severe gusts forced trees into ceilings of several Louisiana houses. Video of the incident is available on the Aiken Standard site, with viewers instructed to search for the video via the site’s video link.
Anna Tovo and Bradley Cardona watched a thermite weld demo by the Savannah River Site American Chemical Society at the Aiken Railroad Depot during National Transportation Week. Officials explained rail welding history and future construction plans as All Aboard! fundraising nears 2.1 million dollars for the depot project.
Ameri can Cancer Society’s Aiken Relay For Life drew more than a thousand people to Aiken High School track for a 12 hour event to fund cancer research. Mayor Fred Cavanaugh opened with remarks as volunteers detailed planning and support behind the effort led by families including 10 year old Carley McMaster.
SRNS will offer jobs to about 99 percent of management and operations staff at the Savannah River Site with similar pay and benefits. CEO Chuck Munns announced at a USC Aiken town hall that SRNS will take over from WSRC around Aug. 1, with nearly 400 attendees hearing plans. The new team includes Sam Bhattacharyya as Savannah River Laboratory director, and SRNS pledges safety, continuity, and a continuing mission.
