Washington AP The Commerce Department reports the U.S. trade deficit rose to 8.92 billion in March, a 26.8 percent jump from February�s 7.04 billion. Oil and cars fell in March while imports of semiconductors, heavy machines, and chemicals rose. February deficit was revised downward from 8.2 billion.
Upstate obstetricians expect a surge in births this fall as ice storms in January and February kept roads closed and disrupted work. Doctors report a rise in pregnancies beginning in February, with increases likely in September and November.

Community leaders praise the development for economic benefits and attracting retirees, with 600 oak seedlings to be given to visitors to commemorate the opening.
A group home for teenage mothers is planned to open in Aiken later this year or early fall under the Nurture Home program, operated by the Mental Health Association in Aiken County with United Way support. Five young mothers and babies will reside, receive mentoring, counseling, and lessons on birth control, budgeting, and staying in school, with staying in school a requirement. Network Aiken hosted a gift shower to support the home, emphasizing opportunities in business and community service.
The first vitrified waste canister from the Cold War era was shown at Savannah River Site. Under Secretary Thomas Grumbly attended a ceremony as the canister was moved to underground storage in the Glass Waste Storage Building near the DWPF. Officials hailed the move as a key step in cleaning up legacy nuclear waste and noted the DWPF process heats waste to over 2000 degrees Fahrenheit before solidifying it with frit.
