Died in Barnwell County car crash on S C 125 Savannah River Plant
North Augusta teen Jerry B Lowe III 18 died at the scene when the car he rode in overturned on Savannah River Plant property five miles north of the Allendale barricade. Driver Stephen McClendon 19 was treated and released from University Hospital after authorities said he apparently dozed off before the wreck. No charges filed.

Escaped Juveniles Captured After Truck Theft in Aiken
Two juveniles from Jackson and North Charleston were arrested in Clearwater after fleeing a Columbia detention center. A stolen riverbed truck loaded with TV cables and tools was found submerged near a Savannah River boat ramp. No weapons were carried. one youth had prior bomb threats but made none this time.

Housing Starts Hit One-Year High In April
U S housing starts rose 1.6 percent in April to a 1.91 million annual rate, led by a 6.4 percent gain in multi unit construction. Single family homes slipped 1 percent while western states and the Northeast posted the strongest gains. Permits slipped 4.9 percent as overall activity reached its best pace since April 1984.
