SRS Receives Sixth Shipment of Spent Nuclear Fuel
The Savannah River Site in South Carolina received 960 pounds of spent nuclear fuel rods from Australia, the sixth shipment since 1996. Over 18 months, SRS has taken nearly 5,500 pounds from multiple countries and expects three more shipments this year. Energy Department spokesman Jim Giusti said the program will move about 21 tons total, with rods routed from Charleston Naval Weapons Station by rail to SRS and then prepared for Yucca Mountain.
