South Carolina speeds above 55 mph rose to 55.9 percent in early 1986 from 42 percent in 1985, risking federal highway funds under 1974 rules. State highway safety director notes more drivers travel over the limit and could trigger financial penalties for road construction.
Lori Land at Dolphin Head Golf Club recounts a Lowcountry incident where an alligator bit and swallowed her golf ball and most of a four foot metal retriever. Leah Arthur, golfing with Land, noted the retriever end remained visible briefly as they left the scene.

Solomon Blatt longtime South Carolina House member and former speaker died at 91 after 53 years in the legislature. He was praised as a strong leader and friend to constituents. Gov. Riley ordered Statehouse flags at half staff.
House Speaker Ramon Schwartz noted Blatt's memory as Senate alters budget work to attend the funeral. Blatt died after a long career starting in 1930, rising to speaker pro tempore in 1935, with his wife Ethel dying in 1985. He is survived by a sister, son, three grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Authorities say the chemical fire in Horse Creek Valley is extinguished and the remaining hazard is smoke. EPA and DHEC continue cleanup while Rep. Derrick urges permanent disposal. about 800 residents evacuated to Bath area churches and schools for about two hours.
Three armed robbery suspects were apprehended after a high speed chase that began in Aiken at about 3 a.m. and ended with a crash in Richmond County. Suspects William Underwood 18 Robert Herndon 18 and Jeffery Parker 20 were charged with assault with intent to kill. the robbery occurred at Northside Gulf on U.S. 1 and I-20 with about $210 taken plus a radio and two calculators valued around $300.
The Graniteville Company denies a U S Labor Department claim that about 27 million dollars in surplus pension assets from its retirement plans were not returned to employees but used to repay corporate debt. The company says it repaid 18.25 million and agreed to pay 36 million over 10 years without interest. The suit remains unsettled and trial is several months away.
An Aiken man, Carl Eugene Russell, was killed when the vehicle he rode in flipped after a drag race on Gordon Highway in Augusta. The other driver, Carl Preston Glover, was seriously injured. Darren Joseph Stewart survived without injury.
