State eyes funds to seal Sumter toxic dump near Lake Marion
A South Carolina Senate subcommittee weighs the cost to close the Pinewood waste landfill shut 15 years after its opening. Safety Kleen set aside 1 million annually to confine waste, yet the site costs average 5 million yearly, with a 35 million environmental trust dwindling under 6 million. Officials consider about 4 million next year while aging liners hazardously near Lake Marion, and lawmakers warn the issue remains unresolved.
