Felon Offenders Warned of Tough Penalties in Gun Case
Stacey Haynes of the US Attorney's Office told a group of about 12 offenders that their felon statuses yield stiffer penalties for future crimes, with up to 10 years for a gun, mandatory 15 years for a bullet or gun, and possible life. Thomas has multiple arrests since 2007 for weapons and drugs and assault. Authorities searched for him but he surrendered Monday. Safe Communities aims to curb crime by rehabilitating offenders with help from law enforcement and residents. High Point, once called Little Chicago, saw violent crime drop 54 percent since 1990 while population rose from 75 000 to 107 000.

School lockdown after local report in North Augusta
Principal Wendy Jacobs said a lockdown at the school began shortly after 3 pm following a report of suspicious activity. North Augusta Department of Public Safety officers responded and gave an all-clear soon after. Students were dismissed after remaining inside for several minutes beyond the regular dismissal time. Public Safety was wonderful, Jacobs added.
