Wayne Rogers, director of North Augusta Community Development and Planning, will resign effective June 14 to join the Business Assistance Network in the new 8 million dollar Business Technology Center. He helped plan annexations and has led the peers division since 1981.

Aiken Weather Sees Heat Wave and Humid Skies

The forecast calls for hot and humid conditions with a tomorrow high in the 90s. Tonight will be fair with lows in the 60s and light variable winds. South winds 5 to 10 mph tomorrow as the day turns partly cloudy.

Citizens Speak At EIS Meeting On SRP Waste

Interested groups voiced views on the Savannah River Plant waste management EIS aimed at hazardous low level radioactive and mixed wastes. Beatrice Jones questioned cost accounting of health effects and life value, and criticized NUS Corp’s $10.7 million three year contract with DOE. Frances Hart urged adherence to the federal water pollution act and state laws for groundwater protection and monitoring.

Philadelphia MOVE siege ends with helicopter attack and arson

Police hunted armed MOVE members after a siege ended when a police helicopter bombed their Philadelphia headquarters. The blast sparked a fire destroying up to 60 houses and leaving the area as a war zone. Detectives said officers surrounded the row house and evacuated about 200 residents as warrants were issued for four MOVE members.

Aiken Sesquicentennial ends year of hard work

A year of planning and effort culminated in a ten day Sesquicentennial Celebration ending Sunday. The organizing committee evolved into Aiken Sesquicentennial Inc, led by Jerry R. Johnson, contracting the Rogers Company for coordination and paying $17 765 plus $1 800 for a nine week director’s living expenses. The nonprofit plans to wind down by September 30 and hopes to finish in the black with gala events and a commemorative history book.

Rose Hill to serve as Anglican Catholic Diocesan HQ

The Rose Hill house in Aiken will become the Diocesan headquarters for the Anglican Catholic Church of the South under Rt. Rev. Tillman B. Williams. The estate once part of Miss Claudia Lea Phelps, who died in 1984, hosts the Rose Hill Arts Center and a 1974 National Register listing. An auction at Chariton Hall Galleries in Columbia will offer items from the Phelps Estate. Williams, a former Navy veteran and Augustinian monk, will relocate to Rose Hill and may establish a priory on site.
