South Carolina rivers are running about half their normal flow prompting officials to warn of higher pollution risk fish kills and possible water rationing. Pope John Paul II woke in stable condition after emergency intestinal surgery for bullet wounds. Doctors warned a possible second operation within a month to complete healing and reroute the intestine. The pontiff, alert with a mild fever, remains in intensive care at Gemelli Hospital in Rome as Italy’s president visited.
