Washington AP reports congressional conferees expect a presidential veto of a bill proposing three aid options for would be homeowners. The plan includes a 6 percent federal loan rising to market rates, a 7 percent fixed loan, or a $1000 down payment grant. Government loans cap at 250 dollars monthly for two years, with total cost estimated at 1.3 to 1.5 billion dollars.
Washington AP reports the Law Enforcement Intelligence Unit LEIU has built a computerized file with about 18 905 names funded by 1.3 million dollars from the federal government. LEIU, with over 200 member agencies in the United States and Canada, is accused by a Houston police official of expanding beyond organized crime to track political dissenters and curious citizens, prompting concerns about broad surveillance.
Juneau Alaska AP reports the Alaska House 21 to 17 voted to remove criminal penalties for adults possessing any amount of marijuana for personal use in their homes. A $100 civil fine would replace the prior $1,000 fine and up to one year in jail, aiming to decriminalize possession if Gov. Hammond signs the bill, following Oregon’s 1973 move.
