Aiken area bands perform this evening at Schofield Gymnasium at 8 p.m. as the Spring Arts Festival's fourth program. The lineup includes Aiken Junior High New Ellenton Junior High Kennedy Junior High bands plus several junior high and stage ensembles. Directors are William Slaughter James Kitchings and Sylvester Young. No admission charge. The festival is directed by the Aiken Recreation Department Mike Facciolo.
Twenty four Green Beret soldiers from Fort Bragg will journey 3,000 miles from Illinois to Oregon in Army assault boats, retracing Merriwether Lewis and William Clark on the Missouri and Columbia rivers. About 200 North Vietnamese were reported killed and a regimental base camp and arms factory destroyed. Ninety South Vietnamese Marines were killed or wounded. the attackers pressed a 4 am assault on a 500 man Marine battalion, leaving six Marines dead and 48 wounded.
The House Ways and Means Committee has placed core elements of President Nixon’s family assistance plan into a massive Social Security welfare reform bill. It includes a substantial federal takeover of welfare and a $2,400 income guarantee for a family of four. The measure, approved Wednesday subject to final language review, moves to the House for a possible vote early next month.
A House welfare reform bill asks for voluntary sterilization as part of aid conditions. Separate report notes a freight wreck at Hampton Avenue where two Southern Railway locomotives derailed after striking a tractor-trailer loaded with crushed rock. Critics call it a legislative backdoor move. proponents expect costly renegotiations and a shift from prototypes to full production. Senator William Proxmire vows to use Senate rules to block the project.

Federal agent Jack La Boone says Jack Ronald Senterfeit of Route 4 Box 256 Aiken faces charges of violating state liquor laws and possession and manufacture of whiskey mash after deputies found 150 gallons of mash and 10 gallons of whiskey in his Merretts Bridge area home. A still pot was recovered nearby.
Washington reports the Nixon administration seeks a broad economic upsurge to cut unemployment and curb inflation. With a third of 1971 gone, the jobless rate hovered near six percent and wholesale prices accelerated despite slower consumer price gains.
South Carolina House moves two welfare reform bills led by Rep Lucius Porth. One bill allows voluntary sterilization at state expense, the other requires able bodied welfare recipients to work on projects such as highway litter removal.
