Canadian deal ends death penalty bid in Easley murder case
Pickens County prosecutor Bob Arial says he reached an agreement with Canadian authorities not to seek the death penalty to return suspect Roger Eugene Shephard to face murder charges in Easley. He argues no reasonable alternative existed and warns such deals send the wrong message to defendants seeking refuge to dodge punishment. Shephard faces murder and related charges in the 2006 killing of Easley pawnshop owner John Bruin. Marie-Helene Giroux, Canada’s attorney, says Shephard claimed refugee status citing cruel and unusual punishment.
