The Aiken Mall Cinemas will host an exclusive 12:01 p.m. May 19 premier of Episode I The Phantom Menace with tickets on sale at 11 p.m. Tuesday night. Five additional showings on May 19 will begin at 9 a.m. Tickets require full price, no passes or discounts for eight weeks.
An 18-wheeler heading east on US 278 swerved into a tractor trailer Tuesday morning, killing the driver Calvin Randolph Lee a 39 of Williams. Investigators from the South Carolina Highway Patrol and Mass Accident Investigation Team questioned witnesses as they assess passing vehicles and reconstruct the crash near Boggy Gut Road two miles east of the Savannah River Site barricade at New Ellenton.
The Aiken County Council's Judicial and Public Safety Committee approved a 580000 outlay for an aerial ladder truck for the Sage Mill Industrial Park. The 100-foot ladder vehicle from Jack L. Slagle Fire Equipment will arrive faster than American LaFrance and for about 13000 less. The truck is a walk on item at the Tuesday meeting.

Trivelas E Aiken was unanimously chosen by the Aiken County Board of Education to lead East Aiken Elementary School. She has served since 1997 as district special education director and previously as assistant principal at North Aiken Elementary and Pinecrest annex, with plans to continue the work of outgoing principal Bess Boyette.
Lou Holtz, named head football coach at South Carolina, spoke to the Aiken County Gamecock Club amid high expectations after a 1-10 season. Holtz, one of 15 coaches with 200 career wins, urged summer progress and emphasized the challenge ahead following USC’s disappointing year and Bernard Scott era.
