In Pittsburgh AP says a General Mail Facility worker was accused Saturday of stealing about 100 Mother’s Day cards. The suspect, unnamed, gave a statement and was suspended as investigators probe thefts of greeting cards found discarded around the city. Inspector Charles Law noted many recipients send money or tickets to mothers to visit.
In Morris County New Jersey juror Sara Grace Conrad 43 returned a blank jury payment check rather than cashing it She had been assigned a nine day term and was eligible for 48 60 in daily rate and mileage but chose not to cash the check following friends urging her to take the money she earned.

William Kennedy Smith surrendered on rape and battery charges after being booked in Palm Beach and called the police investigator's account an outrageous lie. The 30 year old Georgetown medical student posted $10,000 bond and spoke briefly to reporters with his mother, Welch Kennedy Smith, present. arraignment tentatively set for June 14.
Civic, business, and gov leaders in Aiken County urge residents to attend DOE hearings on the Savannah River Site reactor project. Began April 19 with a six day public comment period and four hearings set: May 21 in Aiken, May 24 in Augusta, May 28 in Savannah, May 31 in Columbia.
Citizens may sign up to speak at the hearing by calling 1-800-259-3446 between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. EST Monday through Friday, at least three working days before the hearing. Columbia state Rep. Paul Derrick, 43, was found guilty by a federal jury on two counts of vote selling after a quick two hour deliberation. He conferred with counsel, appeared calm, and remains free on bond awaiting sentencing. Derrick faces up to 40 years in prison and a $500,000 fine. He will automatically be expelled from the House following the verdict.
