Aiken County Council Approves Drainage and Building Projects
The Aiken County Council approved plans for a Gloverville EMS station at 38 000 and repairs at Banksia library for 21 500. The islanders approved incorporation to form the Town of Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. Final unofficial totals: 2390 in favor 59 percent and 1634 opposed about half of the island’s voters turned out. The new town adopts a council manager government with nonpartisan elections. Fraud Cases Go On Trial
In Columbia Lexington County juries will hear the first trials next week in a large food stamp fraud case involving two of 23 August indicted defendants. A federal agent tied to undercover work is under a federal grand jury probe in Columbia. Ten federal indictments stemming from the probe were dismissed or moved after misconduct allegations prompted USDA internal reviews of William M. Cross. Cross reportedly failed to account for up to 1600 of 132000 food stamps in the investigation.
