About 20 Aiken Countians remembered Confederate Memorial Day in South Carolina. The Gen. Joe Wheeler Camp No. 1245 sponsored the ceremony on the steps of Aiken First Baptist Church near the Battle of Aiken site. Gen. Wheeler commanded about 7,000 troops against Union Gen. The service featured Company C of the 11th Georgia Confederate Artillery Battalion firing volleys over graves. Camp Commander W. E. Thompson led salutes and pledges to the flags. Capt. Jack Thomson discussed Wheeler’s defense of Aiken against Sherman’s raid on Bath Paper Mill and Graniteville Cotton Mill.
