President Nixon and Vice President Gerald R. Ford held a private meeting in Washington their first since Ford warned Watergate disclosures shook public trust.
A group of top business leaders said the U S economy will either stay steady or fall in 1974, contrasting with Nixon administration expectations of about 1 percent real GNP growth. The GNP fell 5.8 percent in the first quarter of 1974.
President Nixon announced an additional $10.3 billion to bolster the housing market. The plan will subsidize interest rates on conventional government insured mortgages and provide extra cash to savings and loan institutions to steady the market.
Washington AP reports Rep. Jonathan Bingham introduces a bill to bar President Nixon from claiming a tax deduction for charitable contributions of the White House tape recordings. The proposal targets the deduction in the taxes on Nixon’s gifts and contributions.
North Korea said the American helicopter it fired on was inside its territory and rejected an American report that two choppers were fired on while south of the Demilitarized Zone.
The Harvard Lampoon’s 34th Movie Worsts Awards cited The Great Gatsby as the year’s worst film. Editors faulted it for making the Jazz Age look like Muzak Era and for marketing Gatsby products such as Gatsby power tools and Gatsby burgers.

Larry Cave Jr., 21, pleaded guilty to four counts including two house break-ins and arson at Wesley Methodist Church. He received 21 years total. Investigators linked Feb 21 church fire to a break-in at Seigler’s Insurance across the street and a Feb 16 service station burglary at Richland and Union Streets with theft of a TV and radio. A separate residence theft involved money and whiskey.
Federal Judge Solomon Blatt Jr ordered Aiken County sterilization suit lawyers to file briefs on whether the ACLU solicited clients to instigate the case. He said the matter must be settled before other issues and set a hearing once briefs are filed.
United Way of Aiken County announces two new posts. Sarah P. Jordan becomes administrative associate director, replacing the former office manager. Richard Hunter serves as Planning and Evaluation Chairman for the 1974 campaign, appointed by Ashley J. Little.
The Aiken Junior Woman's Club will hold a recycling day tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Mitchell Shopping Center. Old magazines catalogs and paper bags will be accepted. Proceeds support Boy Scout Troop 146. Confederate Memorial Day observed with state and county offices closed.
Aiken County Grand Jury recommends a metro narcotics unit to handle misdemeanor backlog and traffic cases. A new county court is proposed to reduce delays with Sheriff salary hikes and county funds to support county-wide operation shared with cities.
More than 50 people gathered at Farmers and Merchants Bank as government and industry leaders endorsed a $22 million wastewater treatment plant serving Horse Creek and its tributaries. No opposition was voiced to the plan.
Vandalism to Aiken County roadside refuse bins continues as two bins had to be lifted by crane to the landfill after being filled with broken cinderblocks. The county spends about 3000 to 4000 dollars per incident and considers hiring a county litter officer to combat the problem. A suspect was removed after attempting to unload bricks into a bin on Highway 1 near Monetta.
In a reconvened session Aiken City Council endorsed the Horse Creek Valley Wastewater Treatment System and named two parties in a suit to compel action on the unrepaired Southern Railway bridge. The council voted to attend a city employee cleanup day to press for the Laurens Street bridge repair, which collapsed last January. City Attorney Henry Busbee sought authorization.
The Aiken City Council approved a comprehensive zoning amendment restricting portable signs to 10 square feet and requiring removal within 30 days, enforcement led by Fire Chief Charles Cupp. Nonconforming signs face up to five years to upgrade, while the rule aims to improve safety and city appearance.
