April wholesale prices rose 0.5 percent the smallest gain in 11 months as food prices fell 2.8 percent. Overall producer prices cooled from March and February gains while energy costs edged higher. Gasoline up 4.3 percent. housing and car sectors showed mixed movement amid a looming recession and rising unemployment.
A 574 foot cargo ship struck the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in St. Petersburg causing a section to fail and sending a Greyhound bus with 23 aboard into Tampa Bay. Two dead and a survivor were reported. Coast Guard initially feared 90 drowned. Greyhound says 22 passengers plus driver were aboard. In separate action, Congress moved to prevent food stamp funding lapse by approving an extra $6 billion over two years.
Executives from major U S firms warn of a recession this year as severe as postwar periods except 1974 75. The outlook is more pessimistic than the Carter administration forecast and the Council briefing highlights potential economic stress.

Dr Finley A Kennedy of Aiken honored as Lower Savannah Region Outstanding Older American after earlier win in February for Aiken County. He served 50 years in medicine, led Aiken County Hospital 1953 1962 and remains active with Rural Health Services. Kennedy credited older Americans with loyalty and reciprocity and reflected on his long career from 1931 onward.
Warrenville postmaster Myrtie Cushman is named South Carolina Postmaster of the Year earning the Olin D. Johnston Award in Columbia. She began as acting postmaster in 1967 and was appointed in 1970, serving 1,300 residents and balancing the office budget.
Former President Richard M. Nixon calls President Carter ineffective and says his emphasis on hostage safety invites blackmail in an ABC 20 20 interview. Nixon would not return to politics but predicts Carter and Reagan will seek their party nominations in 1980.
