Lobster Races Highlight Aiken Celebration on Main Street
Downtown Aiken hosted the 15th annual WBBQ/Coors Light Lobster Races and Kidfest with lobster themed gear, food stands, obstacle courses, and live bands on Newberry Street and The Alley. Funds benefit local charities including Hitchcock Rehabilitation Center, Tri-Development Center and Special.

Doctor saves life at Odell Weeks center
An off duty physician Dr Daniel Snider of Aiken Regional Medical Centers saved a 55 year old man at the Odell Weeks Recreation Center. Police officer Eddie George helped summon responders and Aiken Department of Public Safety crews used a defibrillator to restore a pulse. The man was transported to ARMC in critical condition with stable vital signs.

Purple Heart group forms in Aiken with first meet
The Aiken chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart was established Friday and includes 12 wounded veterans from World War II to Panama. Rick Bernardi is the first commander with charter members Roy Arthur William Zion Marvin Buncher and others. State MOPH commander Al Silvano hails the dedication at Millbrook Baptist Church gym. Rep. Roland Smith spoke on veterans service and courage under fire.

N A native doctor dies after eight week cancer battle
Dr. Peggy Rummel, a North Augusta native who moved to Miller County in 1983 to practice rural medicine, died at 43 after a liver cancer diagnosis. She raised eight foster children, helped the high school, kept the hospital open, and arranged her own funeral plans before dying Friday. Dr. Ifekan-Shango Simon agreed to take over her practice last week.
