Community United For Tomorrow's Future formed to aid unwed and homeless mothers in Aiken County. The group plans to locate a donor house, raise funds through an attic sale, and hold community events to support these young women and their newborns amid ongoing housing and poverty pressures.
Aiken planners will review a proposal by BOLD to erect a statue of Dr. Martin Luther King at the Barnwell Avenue and Laurens Street intersection. The plan accompanies a memorial highway designation approved 4-3 by the City Council, amid mixed support for street signs and memorial markers.
A new group forms to aid young mothers in Aiken. It seeks a temporary shelter to teach basic parenting and recruit volunteers. An SW attic sale and live auction is set for May 14 to raise funds for the shelter.
Elizabeth Benton unveiled Area 1 elementary rezoning to the public after three meetings. Parents voiced mixed reactions amid bus routing and traffic concerns, with many worried about longer cross-town rides for students and persistent integration guidelines.
Columbia-Aiken attorney Ronnie Maxwell will head the S C Democratic Party for two years after defeating Columbia lawyer Joe McCulloch for the term. He replaces Albert McAlister who did not seek re election after two terms. Maxwell urged unity and organization to show South Carolinians a mainstream, morally focused platform.
Tourism boosters from Aiken and Edgefield County hosted a five hour welcome at Interstate 20 near North Augusta. The event featured food displays, music, and demonstrations from quilting to pottery. June Murff led the effort with Joyce Freeman and local officials to promote South Carolina tourism under the Faces and Beautiful Places theme and showcased retirement and pre Civil War pottery displays at the center.
