Rain began in the Aiken area and is expected to continue tonight and possibly tomorrow. The U S Weather Bureau puts the likelihood of showers and thunderstorms at near 100 percent today, dropping to about 40 percent tomorrow.
U.S. war planes returned to the Hanoi area for the first time in three weeks and bombed storage depots barracks and training facilities supporting the North Vietnamese invasion of South Vietnam. Carrier planes reportedly hit targets near Hanoi with at least two carriers in the Tonkin Gulf and about 150 planes available.
Italy wrapped up voting as 78.9 percent of 37 million eligible voters cast ballots in fine weather. The Christian Democrats and potential coalition partners faced uncertain chances of a majority, with a seventh hour of balloting remaining. It marked Italy's sixth election since becoming a republic 26 years ago.
Honduran army troops comb a forested mountain area for a hijacker who parachuted from an Eastern Airlines jet with 303000 dollars. In a separate incident a Vietnam era protester took a Western Airlines plane over Utah and steered it to Cuba.
Officials at Sunshine Mining Co report 58 miners missing after a mine fire in Kellogg Idaho. General manager Marvin C. Chase says 11 more names joined the missing list after a thorough personnel study. The confirmed death toll stands at 35 with 108 men escaping.
President Nixon summoned top advisers to the White House for a crucial policy meeting on Vietnam as his Moscow summit fate hangs in the balance. Secretary of State William P Rogers cut short European travels to attend the National Security Council session.
Aiken County efforts for the mentally retarded were honored at a South Carolina Association of Retarded Children meeting in Columbia. Mrs. W H Winans was reelected president. The Aiken County Chapter won a state outstanding chapter award. Graniteville Co named State Employer of the Year for employing 42 mentally retarded workers and hiring from the rehabilitation center.
The Thunderbirds and five airmen in F 4E Phantom II jets wowed 30 000 spectators at the annual Aiken Air Show sponsored by the 8611th Radar Squadron and Eagle Aviation. Army helicopters from Fort Gordon demonstrated maneuvers including a simulated attack as parachutists and fast jets roared through the sky.
Thunderbirds and Fort Gordon Jump Club paratroopers displayed aerial maneuvers while an Air National Guard fly by occurred. Nick Jones of Aiken piloted a Piper Cub performing aerobatics as ground observers watched ROTC drill team display precision on the ground. Picnic crowds enjoyed shade and views as airplane rides were offered by Eagle.
South Carolina Highway Department prioritizes a Rutland Drive crossing near Aiken High School for automatic flashing lights costing 15 000 to 18 000 dollars funded mostly by the state with Southern Railway contributing 10 percent. The project ranks seventh in a list of 34 crossings as the Aiken planter notes urged protection after review by officials and the Aiken Standard. The Rutland device will be installed in the fiscal year starting July amid ongoing 68 mile Aiken bypass work 69 percent complete under a 600 000 dollar Knox Rivers Construction contract.

A telephoned threat followed by a car fire outside Rose's Department Store in Aiken is under investigation to determine if it was intentional. The owner of the vehicle, Mrs. John T. Sales, was not harmed as the fire was contained by the fire department. Police also reported a broken police car window and a burglary in a truck at Kalmia Plaza Texaco, with several local break-ins noted over the weekend including the Aiken Bowling Alley.
Aiken City Council will hear petitions from Dupree Street residents seeking relocation of Hopelands parking from Dupree Street to Whiskey Road. The Downtown Revitalization Committee requests removal of downtown parking meters. Aiken Day School ninth grade class presents a petition on a downtown mall.
The Atomic Energy Commission says there is a reasonable prospect of storing Savannah River Plant waste in bedrock beneath the plant for up to 1,000 years. The NRC NAS panel urges exploratory shafts to study rock properties and water movement before vault construction.
