Hollie Perry Sr. 74, father of NFL great William Refrigerator Perry, was arrested after a 911 hang up at a Teague Street home. Officers say he returned with a .32 caliber pistol, pointed it at a woman, and engaged in abusive conduct before being taken into custody for criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature. He is held at the Aiken County Detention Center.

Saturday's Critter Carnival and Awesome Animal Awareness Day at Vir ginia Acres City Park featured a petting zoo sponsored by Eudora Farms and Mark Nisbet, camel rides, a pet show, and informational booths. Highlights included an obedience demo by Aiken Dog Training Club and a fox hound parade. Proceeds benefit the Animal Shelter.
In Graniteville on Saturday the Youth Fishing Rodeo marked its tenth anniversary with 2,500 attendees including families from the Central Savannah River Area. Organizers from Avondale Mills, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the Harry Hampton Memorial Wildlife Fund led a morning of free fishing, with prizes for tagged catfish, exhibits from the Savannah River Institute and the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, and a bicycle prize drawing.
Calendar notes a 7 p.m. karate class at the old N.A. recreation building run by the Parks and Recreation Department with a contact number 215-1171. Also at 7 p.m. a Session Band performs at Hopelands Gardens.
The Aiken Planning Commission will discuss rezoning a 0.39 acre parcel on Colony Parkway from limited professional to office institutional to allow a 176 foot tower by Bellsouth Personal Communications Inc. Opposition from Wilkins Byrd and the Aiken Historic Foundation is expected as the site is a buffer area near Carolina Bay Reserve and Palmetto Golf Course. The commission already continued the matter at Bellsouth’s request after a April 11 hearing.
