A Stanford Medical Center study of 713 smokers in five California cities finds ultra low nicotine cigarettes lead to smoking more to compensate, yielding nearly the same toxin exposure as higher yield brands. Dr. David J. Maron cautions there is no safe cigarette and quitting is best.
Norma Jean, a 600 pound pig famed for sipping champagne and attending a black tie debutante party, died April 30 at her home in Lumberton North Carolina. Veterinarians cited illness and noted she was near her third birthday. The owner Dr Raymond Sattler was away at a medical convention and could not be reached for comment.

Du Pont Co. President Edgar S. Woolard Jr urges the United States to promptly construct a modern replacement reactor at the Savannah River Plant. Speaking at USC Aiken, he cites Washington battles ahead with DOE officials and suggests citizen input to congressmen.
The Senate backed a Democrat crafted 1 trillion dollar budget by 56 to 42 vote. It would raise about 119 billion in new taxes over four years and increase domestic spending while holding military outlays to inflation.

Four people died in a Chesterfield Street house fire. Investigators say an electrical short in the attic likely started the blaze, with autopsies confirming identities. Survivors James and Eula Johnson, Norman Johnson and Ezelle Tyler’s relatives note prior fire loss. Public Safety officials call it Aiken’s worst house fire.
