The three year old Puntilla owned by Cragwood Stables and trained by MacKenzie Miller was considered a Derby prospect but died during the Derby week amid a string of unexplained happenings. The full story will run in tomorrow's Aiken Standard by Daniel Ford.
Officials say a disarmament pact signed to end the Wounded Knee occupation could take effect this week. The deal requires surrender of weapons and nonresidents to leave by 9 a.m. Wednesday, followed by an April 5 provision for civil rights inquiries and an audit of tribal funds on Pine Ridge Reservation.
In Los Angeles Judge Matt Byrne will disclose an affidavit by former White House aide Egil Krogh to clarify links between the Pentagon papers trial and Watergate. E Howard Hunt says Krogh ordered a break in at the psychiatrist of Daniel Ellsberg, a defendant. Krogh is on leave as undersecretary of transportation.
The first Mekong River convoy to Phnom Penh in two weeks arrives after a tanker is sunk by Communist fire. Newport reports insurgents overran a post 34 miles northwest, killing about 100 troops. A convoy of three tankers three freighters and three munitions barges faced heavy shore fire 26 miles from Phnom Penh. one tanker sunk and two freighters ablaze, crews extinguished fires.
Kissinger and Soviet officials prepare to resume talks in a guarded government compound outside Moscow. U.S. sources offered no timetable or list of Soviet participants. Kissinger met with Leonid Brezhnev during a prior visit at the Volga region compound.
Aiken's Green Hornets face Union tonight in the first best out of three for the quarterfinals of the state tournament. The second game is set for 7 30 p m Wednesday at Citizens Field in Aiken with a third game on a neutral site if needed. Jeff Roberts will start for Aiken and both coaches call the matchups very tough with Union boasting the state’s best hitter and fast baserunners while Aiken also fields an excellent team.
Ambassador Marion Smoak, in Aiken, calls Watergate a foolish, naive prank while defending the president and criticizing press coverage. He praises Henry Kissinger as a great brain and recalls a White House gate glitch during Chancellor Brandt’s Florida visit.
A former prisoner of war Lt. Col. J Quincey Collins Jr of Winnsboro will be a keynote speaker at a Saturday rally hosted by the Chamber of Commerce at Aiken High School Stadium. The event follows a Friday morning prayer breakfast at St John’s Methodist Church with Paul Anderson and other attendees including Fort Gordon personnel. Col Collins, shot down over North Vietnam seven and a half years ago, was released after the Paris peace accords.
Atty. Gen. nominee Elliot Richardson said he would appoint a special, independent prosecutor to head the Watergate investigation if confirmed. He stressed the appointee would report only to him and have full independence and staff support. Senate confirmation hearings commence Wednesday.
Three schools crowned May Day queens in the Aiken area. Aiken High School’s queen was Debbie Ridenour, with Beverly Jackson crowned at Mead Hall and Lynn Padgett named Schofield’s May Queen. P. E. Beasley presided over the event.
The Aiken County Commissioners will consider filling vacancies on the library board whose terms have expired. The meeting is Tuesday at 8 p.m. in room 107 of the University of South Carolina at Aiken.
The Aiken County Hospital reports eight-year turnaround from red ink to profit with total assets of 2.64 million and gross income of 3.40 million in the year ended Sept 30 1972. Net patient charges barely cover operating expenses, but indigent care grants, the Hall estate, Duke Endowment funds, and other income push overall profit close to 300 thousand. A feasibility study on a new hospital building and phased construction will be discussed at 7 30 p m in the Heritage Room of Farmers and Merchants Bank.
