Merriam Webster keeps slurs marked not removed
Merriam Webster will flag about 200 racial slurs in the 1999 Collegiate Dictionary with italics to warn readers of offensive usage while keeping the words in the dictionary. The company says the aim is context and caution, not removal, and notes the term nigger described as an offensive racial slur with earliest uses cited.
