States, Congress fail to clean up school bus emissions
States and Congress have not secured funds or delivered promised federal aid to retrofit or replace diesel school buses. Older buses emit dangerous particulates linked to asthma and lung cancer, with filters costing between seven hundred and seven thousand five hundred dollars per unit. Approximately 390000 diesel school buses remain, many built before 1990, allowing emissions through doors and windows.
