More than 300 Aiken Standard readers have submitted entries for the Stumper contest with a 6 p.m. deadline today. Judges have discarded several envelopes for incorrect folding and rule noncompliance as readers rush to beat the deadline and boost their winning odds.
Gov. Francis W. Sargent signed into law a bill making cranberry juice the official state drink of Massachusetts. Industry representatives toasted with juice as lawmakers approved the measure. The state grows more than half the world cranberry crop, mainly in Plymouth County and Cape Cod.
Gov Knowles ordered a 30 day closure of a 35 mile stretch of the Wisconsin River after mercury levels in game fish were found. The action affects two popular reservoirs. The DNR told a chemical plant to stop discharging mercury compounds and to begin testing wildlife and fishing water in 27 counties.
The House sent to President Nixon a bill expanding free or low-cost lunches for eight million low income children. It also authorizes a $25 million annual breakfast program and sets lunch costs at no more than 20 cents depending on family income. Nixon seeks $684 million yearly for child nutrition in a separate bill.
Stephen P. Szilagyi of Philippus United Church of Christ in Cincinnati will conduct the worship services at the White House next Sunday Mother's Day for President Nixon and his family. Szilagyi also serves as chaplain of the Department of Ohio of the American Legion.
Mrs Rose Kennedy greeted shoppers on Fifth Avenue promoting perfumes made by the mentally retarded. She wore a white and violet Givenchy dress and spoke from a glass topped counter before leaving by limousine. The line is marketed by Flame of Hope Inc a nonprofit started by Eunice Kennedy Shriver to provide jobs and training.
Fluvan a County supervisors adopt an ordinance blocking a planned three day rock festival in the central Virginia community. Trips Unlimited of Alexandria had called off the Memorial Day weekend event expected to draw 40 000 people after opposition but about 400 residents still spoke out against the idea.
U S troops began a third assault into Cambodia from the central highlands facing fierce enemy fire and severe weather that limited helicopter landings.
Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Dayan offered Egypt an unconditional cease-fire while pledging to hold the canal front against Soviet aid. He stressed Israel would not be driven from the Suez line and urged a broader halt to hostilities. Arab attacks spread to Latin America as U S and South Vietnamese forces pursue a major air mobile offensive in Pleiku and Snoul in Cambodia with heavy fighting and napalm.
After the Kent State killings, protests erupt on college campuses nationwide. National Guard units fire on demonstrators in Ohio wounding several. ROTC buildings targeted. Maryland declares a state of emergency with curfew as clashes widen. Syracuse Wisconsin campuses report fires and blockades amid student unrest.
Aiken County General Sessions Court sentenced Jimmy Ray LaRussa a father of three to 22 years after he pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter in the Sept 9 Beech Island Kimberly-Clark parking lot shooting. Judge Julius B. Ness noted the emotional state and estrangement as factors in the case.
Aiken County lawmakers decided to reopen review of the 100 acre site north of US 1 between Aiken and Graniteville for USC’s regional campus. Senators and representatives split over the selection with plans to meet the Higher Education Commission to confirm if the site is the best option near the county center.
A Stop-Smoking Clinic launched with a 16 of 25 attendees committing to a Five Day Plan that includes six eight ounce glasses of water daily fruit and fruit juice meals only deep breathing and walks after meals and warm showers. The program aims to flush nicotine and strengthen will power by choosing not to smoke and not promising never to smoke.
A cold wave grips South Carolina for a second day with new season lows. Aiken reports an unofficial 48 degree low while Charleston 54 and Columbia 42 lead the thermometer readings. Afternoon temperatures reach the 70s today and Wednesday with fair, cool conditions tonight.
