Former death row inmate Sterling Spann granted parole
Sterling Spann, 43, was released on parole after the Probation Parole and Pardon Services board voted 5-1. He spent 17 years on death row before a 2002 plea that stopped short of guilt but acknowledged sufficient evidence for possible conviction in the 1981 Melva Niell death. Spann will relocate to Connecticut where a job awaits, per attorney Lionel S. Lofton.
