DEA chief optimistic about meth crackdown in Southeast

DEA Administrator Karen Tandy told 850 law enforcers in Gatlinburg that 33 states have adopted controls on pseudoephedrine to curb meth. She cited reformulation by manufacturers and behind the counter sales as progress while urging deeper action against superlabs in Mexico and supply chains in Asia. Gonzales pledged support to quickly identify labs and tighten prosecutions as meth labs surged nationwide in 2004. Tennessee reported 1,355 labs, while 7 tons of pseudoephedrine were diverted for meth production.
