Washington AP reports the jobless rate fell to 5.4 percent in April the lowest in 14 months despite heavy losses in construction and manufacturing. The Clinton administration hailed the drop as overall GDP rose 2.8 percent in Q1 1995 amid winter blizzards and a government shutdown.
U S spending rose 0.6 percent in March to a 5.1 trillion dollar annual rate, down from February’s 1.2 percent jump. Personal incomes increased 0.5 percent to a 6.38 trillion dollar rate, hindered by an 18 day General Motors strike that limited growth.

Avondale shifts to functional leadership with Keith Hull promoted, moving to Graniteville to oversee multiple lines and operations during the transition. Kingsmore will remain through the transition.
Graniteville founded in 1845 by William Gregg remains the oldest U S textile firm under its charter. Avondale buys Graniteville for 255 million dollars in cash to reduce debt and grow to over 1 billion in annual sales with 7500 employees, boosting Avondale’s denim and greige sectors.
Two area lawmakers report the House National Security Committee authorized 5.4 billion dollars for the Department of Energy Fiscal 1997 Environmental Management budget, signaling full funding of Clinton's 1997 cleanup plan across the weapons complex. The Savannah River Site relies heavily on EM funding, with 1.6 billion in 1996 and past cuts of 760 million. Georgia and South Carolina representatives plan to meet in Washington with Rep.
