MOSCOW AP reports two quakes hit Soviet Georgia five days after a deadly tremor that killed at least 81. A Georgian official said three people died today as landslides caused vast devastation. The Soviet news agency cited a quake as strong as Monday’s 7.1 event. A Georgian spokeswoman from Tbilisi confirmed three fatalities.

A Senate subcommittee unveils a plan to reapportion South Carolina districts that would split Aiken County into different congressional districts. The proposal carves out lines near Pine Log Road and Hitchcock Parkway, placing Aiken and North Augusta in separate districts and moving parts of Wagener New Ellenton and Beech Island into Rep Spence and Rep Derrick districts. If approved, this would mark the first modern bipartisan county split in congressional maps with Justice Department considerations noted.
