In Charlotte four Democratic hopefuls declined to promise a Black vice presidential pick for the party. Gov. Jerry Brown said he would appoint the first Black governor if elected, citing his current lieutenant governor Mervyn Dymally. Carter, Udall and Church also spoke to the caucus.
In Fort Wayne and Indianapolis reports, Goldwater and Rockefeller, representing opposing GOP wings, criticized Reagan for attacking President Ford's Panama Canal policies. Reagan said U.S. troops in the canal zone should be used if needed to keep the canal open, likening the Alaska issue to U.S. interests in Panama.
A study by the Southern Growth Policies Board shows the South outpacing the nation in economic and population growth from 1970 to 1975. Personal income, new jobs and state tax revenues rose faster despite a recession, with service jobs leading gains and manufacturing shifting to high wage industries. The South added 5,315,000 people, an 86 percent rise versus 4.8 percent nationwide.
Heavy rain stalled buses and cars as students dressed in 1950s attire gathered for Aiken Smith Day at the high school. Wanda McCharen from USCA sparked the event by noting absent-minded university types, while a mistaken Ft Worth zip code prompted a correction to 76109.
AP analysis notes Ronald Reagan scored a decisive win in the Texas primary, boosting his momentum as the GOP race extends toward the Kansas City convention. President Ford campaigns for a comeback in Indiana but faces a tougher path to the nomination as Reagan broadens his lead.
The Texas primary delivers a sweeping Reagan victory across all 24 districts securing two thirds of delegates in a turnout buoyed by conservative Democrat crossovers. Carter dominates the Democratic side with 89 delegates while Bentsen exits the presidential race and runs for Senate. Jackson quits for money, leaving Carter far ahead in Indiana.
Wagener hosts a four day festival themed around the bicentennial drawing crowds from across the country. The event features beauty pageants parades dances and carnivals plus a massive barbecue of 20 hogs with 3325 pounds of meat and 75 gallons of sauce served to about 1500 attendees. Rodeo events by the South Carolina High School Rodeo Association open the celebration at A L Corbett Middle School with calf roping and steer riding drawing large crowds.
The Aiken County Board of Commissioners meets at 7 p.m. in Room 107 at USC Aiken. A public hearing precedes a final reading to transfer 5000 from County Garage to Paramedical Services. Two resolutions authorize intradepartmental fund transfers and May 31 as Memorial Day holiday. Interdepartmental transfers total 1717. Betty H. Eddy petitions on Burnette Street Extension. Burnet town.
The Aiken County Community Action Commission requests an official appeal of the Department of Social Services audit. Harrison Rearden cites 30 day release rules, individual handling of audits, and imminent recoupment of funds owed to DSS.
Murry H. Sill, staff photographer at the Aiken Standard, won the Southern Short Course top award for a portfolio of more than 20 photos in a competition for papers under 20,000 circulation. He also earned an honorable mention at Boone North Carolina.
The North Augusta council meets Tuesday at 8 pm in City Hall council chambers. Items include part of the water and sewer improvements program a Riley presentation a revenue sharing report and policies on city owned tennis courts.
