Computer shop owner Al Duffie of CompuFix in Aiken downplays doomsday fears about Y2K saying only potential glitches are possible when two digit year codes roll to 00. He notes the worry centers on calendar turnover at midnight January 1 and the scramble to prepare.
County officials report most departments ready for Y2K with manual options in place for the magistrate's office. Interim systems upgrades are planned for summary courts, and noncompliant computers will be replaced by year end. The city of Aiken also states it has resolved Y2K issues and plans further preventive steps.
Nancy Mace, who entered The Citadel in 1996 after the college ended its all male admissions policy, is set to graduate with about 400 male cadets at the Saturday commencement. She transferred credits to finish a year early and has kept interviews to a minimum, saying she earned it herself. The Citadel now has 42 women cadets and plans to increase to about 90 next year. Shannon Faulkner was the first woman cadet.
Milosevic agreed to hand over three captured U.S. soldiers to Reverend Jesse Jackson, who urges NATO to halt bombing for one night. Jackson plans a face to face meeting with President Clinton. US officials say the move will not stop NATO airstrikes. NATO jets attacked Yugoslavia as death toll rises in Kosovo.
Rep Lindsey Graham says Jesse Jacksons negotiated release of three American soldiers exposes confusion and ineptness in Bill Clintons foreign policy. The remarks followed Jacksons Yugoslavia trip without admin approval as Graham campaigned in Aiken with Rep Henry Hyde.
