Andrew Sorensen accepted the job as the 27th president of the University of South Carolina. He said he is ready to lead the largest university through state budget cuts and tougher competition in higher education.
The South Carolina General Assembly and Gov Hodges honor Midlands Valley High School band with proclamations for representing the state at the July 4 Independence Day Parade in Washington D C. Rep Roland Smith announced the House proclamation with Senate concurrence during a Tuesday assembly.

The barred owl nicknamed Miles survived after a truck struck it at 60 mph near the Edisto River and later recovered at a Westvaco site. Westvaco forestry supervisor Jim Ewing alerted the South Carolina Center for Birds of Prey, which treats raptors and releases many back to the wild.
The Aiken County board of education will not rush a decision on two old houses at 88 and 84 Canal Street near Leavelle McCampbell school. The Horse Creek Historical Society raised concerns, while Dr. William Gallman said the board remains calm and deliberative.
