Beasley Proposes State Kindergarten Vouchers

Gov Beasley proposes state funded kindergarten vouchers allowing full day or half day options at public or private schools with up to 80 million over three years. Critics warn it could expand to all grades, threaten public schools and transportation remains a concern for private options. Local lawmaker June Shissias opposes vouchers, citing transportation and public system impact. Beasley press aide cites church schools with bus options and carpool possibilities.

Challenger Worley Tangles Thurmond Age in South Carolina Race

North Myrtle Beach motel owner Harold Gene Worley launched a Republican primary challenge to U S Senator Strom Thurmond arguing he is too old to serve at age 3 years more. Worley, 46, has borrowed 600000 for his bid but lacks a campaign team or consultants ahead of the June 11 contest. Thurmond, a longtime incumbent and armed services chair, showed strong support from Gov. Beasley at his kickoff. Democrat Elliott Close, a Springs fortune heir, is a leading candidate with Cecil Williams also seeking the nomination.
