The ANC moved ahead early as millions of ballots were counted in South Africa's first free election. Mandela appears set to win, with de Klerk's National Party trailing. counting centers opened late due to delayed delivery of sealed ballots.
Dr Kathleen A Noble named president of Aiken Technical College making her the first female leader in the 22 year history and slated to assume duties in June. She previously led Daytona Beach Community College campuses and vows to strengthen community ties while interim president continues.
Smith-Hazel Recreation Center on Kershaw Street unveils improvements funded at 75000 over the past year. Terry R Rhinehart director of Parks and Recreation says the upgrades make the facility more user friendly. The open house features free hot dogs tours and demonstrations of new programs including karate and aerobics. A new wall allows two smaller rooms to be used with the main space, expanding activities for seniors and other groups.
Aiken County runoff pits W Ed ward Butler against Eddie Young for county council chairman after their April 19 primary left a tight race. Butler leads in North Augusta and Young in Horse Creek Valley with turnout expected below 10 percent. Polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with results at the County Council chambers.
