Washington reports the government plans to resume nuclear weapons production after safety shutdowns. Energy Secretary Watkins signaled approval to restart tritium at Savannah River and plutonium triggers at Rocky Flats once safety reviews finish, with a Senate testimony expected to confirm targets for year end and summer reopens. Hostage Celebrates End To Long Ordeal
Frank Reed, the second American hostage freed in nine days, checked into a U S military hospital in Wiesbaden and celebrated the end of his captivity with a beer and a large steak. Doctors said the 57 year old educator was weak and tired but well, reunited with his wife Fahima and son Tarek, and arrived from Syria at Rhein Main Air Base aboard a U S Air Force C 141 transport. Reed described a lonely, boring captivity with no news or sense of time.
