Police say Simon and Larry Green were arrested and booked for murder in the Zebra case where 12 people were killed and six wounded over the last five months. Lt. William O Connor noted more arrests may follow as the investigation continues.
Secretary of State Kissinger faces delays in separate Israeli and Syrian troop disengagement after shuttle diplomacy with Egypt. An American aide says talks are very uncertain and no disengagement plan for the Golan Heights will emerge without concessions from both sides with Israel moving first and Syria modifying its April 13 proposals.
May Day activities planned by the Associated Press unfold in Lisbon and Buenos Aires overshadowing Moscow's Red Square parade. Portugal's new junta approves the first legal May Day observance in half a century as a tribute to Portuguese workers amid expected wild protests by unions and leftist groups.
USDA reported raw farm product prices declined six percent from mid March to mid April continuing a six week drop. Prices received by farmers in mid April averaged seventeen percent higher than a year earlier. Consumers may not feel the impact yet as supermarket pricing depends on middlemen.
The Senate confirmed William Simon as secretary of the treasury succeeding George P. Shultz who resigned. The San Francisco Chronicle reports Oakland police found the Minimanual of the Urban Guerrilla in an Oakland apartment once tied to the Symbionese Liberation Army after Patricia Hearst’s February 4 kidnapping. Authorities later took possession of the manual on April 2, with the attorney general stating the Hearst case was conducted by the book.
James D. St. Clair says he will move to quash Jaworski's subpoena for additional White House tapes and documents related to 64 private conversations. He declines to say if Nixon would follow a Supreme Court ruling adverse to the White House case.
