Computer Goof Sends Out The Wrong Grades

Valparaiso High School recalled report cards after a computer scanner misread marks, turning high grades into low and low grades into high. Superintendent Michael Benway said affected students alerted the office and report cards will be re issued April 9 after spring break.

Funeral honors second U S soldier killed in Bosnia

Houston AP Floyd Eric Bright died while on peacekeeping duty in Bosnia and was honored at a Saturday funeral at First Baptist Church Greens Bayou. The 19 year old private first class was killed March 22 when a supply truck left a temporary bridge and rolled over.

Search suspended for missing boaters near Hilton Head

Coast Guard suspended the search for three men missing after a boat capsized in Calibogue Sound during a storm. Two bodies were recovered Friday and an unidentified body found on Wassaw Island. Brad Lazarus, 37, of Charlotte, NC, was found south of Tybee Island, GA.

In Saturday's Aiken Harness Races 11 year old Eau Quarles bet on Nude Beach for the second race but the horse finished fourth. Wrath of Pan narrowly beat Kuwalt in the third race driven by Judge Frank Eppes. The event drew heavy wagering under cloudy cool conditions as track manager Neal Griffin and staff kept the Aiken Mile Track in good shape. The Celebrity Race saw Linda Blake of Aiken Produce defeat Mrs. Murff and others after June Murff drowned following the race in a related incident.

Crowd breaks attendance record at Aiken Harness Races

The Aiken Harness Races drew the largest crowd in a year as 3,691 paid attendees were reported for Saturday, with gate counts surpassing 4,100. USC Aiken athletic director Randy Warrick credited the Triple Crown events, the Aiken Trials and Aiken Steeplechase, for boosting turnout despite overcast, cool weather. First and second row reserved parking sold out, and advanced tickets moved briskly, signaling strong community interest in the spring tradition. David's Pass added a high note with an exhibition mile and continued the racing legacy tied to Brett Pelling Stable.

GOP Votes Tuesday To Fill Huff Vacancy

Republican voters in House District 83 will nominate a candidate to fill the unexpired seat of former Rep. Thomas Huff. North Augusta Councilman T. Scott Beck and Aiken County Board of Education member Sheran Proctor are the two GOP candidates. Polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Aiken County Elections office. winner will likely serve rest of the year as Democrats do not field a candidate. Huff resigned January to seek a State Court of Appeals seat. Beck is a North Augusta city councilman.
