Columbia AP reports ministers oppose a state lottery referendum as a Senate subcommittee weighs placing a November vote on amending the constitution to allow lottery operations. E C Watson of the South Carolina Baptist Convention argues such a vote undermines public duty and morality.
In Columbia the General Assembly faces a setback as the House rejects a conference committee compromise on mandatory health and sex education for public schools. The House demands stronger language denouncing homosexuality, risking the bill's passage this year. Rep Harriet Keyserling notes Senate conferees oppose broader talks.

Aiken's public safety chief predicts crime and accidents will nearly double by 1992. He cites 56 percent growth over five years and 13,886 incidents in 1987 versus 9,302 in 1982, with drug cases up more than 100 percent as security awareness grows.
