Israeli warplanes struck two Soviet built SA2 missile bases at Mansoura in Egypt's Nile Delta and hit Suez Canal targets. The raid marked the deepest Egyptian penetration in eight days and the planes returned unharmed after a brief 10 minute sortie.
In Seoul an Air Lines jet carrying 115 people was hijacked by leftist students and landed at Incheon. South Korean authorities attempted deceptions to signal Pyongyang but the hijackers believed the false setup was North Korean and remained aboard as the pilot asked to depart toward Pyongyang.
Laotian forces recaptured the Sam Thong base site abandoned to the North Vietnamese on March 18. Refugees were urged to return to the near deserted town 90 miles north of Vientiane as sources warned the situation remained precarious. Local officials emphasized control of surrounding hills over town occupancy.
A U S Army officer, First Lt. James B. Duffy of Claremont California, was sentenced to six months confinement and a $1500 fine for the death of a Vietnamese prisoner of war. He had faced life imprisonment on a premeditated murder charge before the court reapportioned the verdict to involuntary manslaughter and conspiracy.
Wayman Dial former Texas police chief of San Marcos aged 35 pleads guilty to first degree burglary of a Beverly Hills home and is to be sentenced April 24. A probation report will be read then. He was fired after Jan 11 arrest and had led San Marcos police for seven years. Dial is also indicted in a San Marcos drugstore burglary on Christmas Eve.
Government economists warn meat prices may climb after last summer with the Agriculture Department noting a 4 percent drop in red meat production in February and pork down 12 percent month over month. Beef edged higher and overall livestock prices reached a record high in March, signaling uncertain outlook for households.
Washington AP reports a federal mediator joined negotiations as the Teamsters seek a wage boost before the 425000 drivers’ contract ends at midnight. Trucking Employers Inc offers $1 an hour rise over three years, while Teamsters demand $1.75 an hour plus benefits. Labor Secretary Shultz also engaged in the rail shopcraft dispute with little progress, as three unions accept a 68 cent wage hike and Sheet Metal Workers reject the deal.
South Carolina governors face a choice on magistrate appointments as debates over making magistrates elected or keeping them as constitutional officers continue. John C. West and Albert W. Watson both favor basing appointments on individual qualifications, with West noting charter revisions may remove magistrate references. West argues voters’ wishes matter when elections occur, but emphasizes appointing the most qualified person.
A Jackson woman Montine Boyd and her two children Barbara eight and David six were hospitalized at University Hospital Augusta after a Plant Road crash near the Savannah River Plant. An infant Stephanie was uninjured and sister Linda Kight was bruised. the car overturned after hitting a water puddle. The plant patrol delivered the injured to the plant medical building. A separate Banks Mill Extension wreck injured 17 year old Steve Edeburn from Lander Lane in a car driven by Robert Terry Lewis of Furman Drive, Aiken. Edeburn suffered a broken shoulder and possible head injuries and was moved to University Hospital, Augusta after initial treatment at Aiken County Hospital.
A U S Navy fighter escort shot down a MIG21 over Thanh Hoa province in North Vietnam. It marked the first American air victory over the North since the bombing halt 17 months earlier. Ground fighting in the western Mekong Delta left at least 33 North Vietnamese regulars dead, while shelling hit Tay Ninh and nearby targets near Saigon.
Lt Gov John C West opened his governor bid with a 19 minute speech at the Heart of Aiken restaurant to about 200 supporters. He urged stopping foreign textile imports citing J P Stevens Co layoffs of 2000 workers and touted pollution control and public education while criticizing Nixon economic policy. Cadets John West and Allan Coward Jr attended. West is a Citadel graduate.
Aiken County Sheriff's Department reported five breakins over the weekend, mainly north of Aiken, with gun and TV thefts. Investigators said several homes were entered Sunday and Saturday nights, some while owners attended church, prompting a rack of shotguns and multiple TVs to be stolen.
Two Aiken teens were treated at Aiken County Hospital after a golf cart prank at Highland Park Golf Club overturned and sprayed them with battery acid. Fred Bodendorf, 17, and a juvenile were charged with three counts of destruction of private property and malicious mischief as greens 2 3 4 and 5 were damaged.
Aiken County will unveil the final home rule bill at a 9 a.m. news conference in the county courthouse courtroom. The measure, backed by a 12 member study committee and revised by the county delegation and legislative council, calls for an elected county council and a professional administrator to run county affairs.
