South Carolina Tax Debate: Sunshine State Compared
A study by the state Board of Economic Advisors finds South Carolina’s tax mix remains competitive with Florida despite a higher top income tax. Florida taxes many items differently, including cigarette, telecom, and hotel taxes, while South Carolina lacks hospital visit tax and has lower local sales tax flexibility. The analysis questions the assumption that eliminating income tax is essential to attract retirees and business. Sanford’s plan to cut the top rate from 7 percent to 4.8 percent was blocked by a Senate subcommittee, leaving the proposal in limbo.
