Chamber Request Made Again Aiken chamber seeks downtown office space

The Aiken Chamber of Commerce plans a second ask before the Historic Preservation Commission to use downtown property for a new office. Robert Newburn says the commission will review the request in a work session with City Council at 5 30 p m and may reconsider only if a on the prevailing side makes a motion. If the panel votes against, the chamber can appeal to circuit court. Newburn notes the site borders the historic district and contributes little to its integrity.

Triple Crown Closes With Harness Races

The 25th Aiken Harness Races, final jewel of the 1996 Ai ken Triple Crown, will be run at the Ai ken Mile Track on Banks Mill Road. Gates open at 10 am with post time at 1 pm. Tickets range from 3 to 6 dollars, with special Railside parking options and free admission for children under six. Proceeds support USC Aiken athletic programs and scholarships.

Beech Island Kimberly Clark Announces 172 Million Expansion

Gov Beasley honors workers as Kimberly Clark confirms a 172 million investment at the Beech Island plant. City to consider traffic signal at Laurens and Hampton

Aiken City Council may approve a traffic signal at Laurens Street and Hampton Avenue to replace confusing left turns. City Engineer Roger LeDuc notes plans mirror existing downtown circles but DOT has twice rejected similar schemes due to cost and preference for other layouts. If approved, project could take two to three years and cost under 50 thousand dollars.
