Stockholders of the Aiken Mile Track announced plans to seek city approval to subdivide the property for single family housing. Real estate broker Sandy Priester called the move economically sound, though it marks the likely end of the Aiken Sulky Races and the year’s Triple Crown. The track, founded 1936 by Dunbar Bostwick, may lose its historic status as efforts to save it failed. Among stockholders, Katie Persall died last year, with her Huntsville heirs Charles and Pam in control. others live out of state. Rezoning must pass planning before council review, with racing dates postponed after May 4–5 show. A coroner’s jury ruled a Jan. 5 collision fatality accidental. Crews searched for missing people at a flattened shopping center as hundreds salvaged what remained of homes. Power outages affected Aiken and surrounding areas, with lines down and scattered damage noted along Horse Creek Valley to Ridge Spring Monetta.
Democratic and Republican camps monitor each other as a noon deadline nears for county and state office filings. Sue Roe Elizabeth Cooper and Preston Mae Posey filed for Aiken County probate judge and clerk of court posts while state Senate redistricting remains in limbo with a June hearing.
Trainer Jimmy Larente Jr reports 11 horses prepared for the Aiken Mile Track event as part of Aiken Triple Crown of Racing. Desert Ruler highlighted among two year olds. Larente to drive four races. Souvenir vendor Horsing Around will sell horse themed items. Gates open 10 am with races at 1 30 pm. Ticket prices 3 dollars adults 1 dollar children. Proceeds benefit Aiken County Shrine Club charities. No glass containers pets on leash no kites or frisbees.
More than 10 000 overdue 1983 real and personal property taxes prompt first notices as a six month process to sell the property begins. The October 1 tax sale will include vehicles boats and inventories, with $1 million owed for 1983 and over $2 million for ten years.
