Counterfeit Bills Made on Local News Press Found

Darlington County pressman Gerald Nelson Fraley pleaded guilty to using The Darlington News and Press equipment to print counterfeit twenty dollar bills since 1993. The case opened when David Soles passed three counterfeit notes on June 27 and officials taped Fraley's incriminating statements.

Health planners hear heart plea in Charleston hearing

More than 350 Aiken County residents may need open heart surgery this year and likely seek treatment out of state. Rebecca Brewer of Aiken Regional Medical Centers urged the State Health Planning Committee to add open heart services to keep funds in Palmetto State. The panel heard Aiken's request, with more input expected as hearings move to Columbia.

Aiken City Council Forms Panel Over Banner Prohibition

The Aiken City Council Monday night approved creating a fact finding committee to resolve disputes over a ban on advertising banners. Mayor Fred Cavanaugh proposed the panel with Planning Commission members merchants and citizens to seek a compromise. Merchants including Herb Martin of four McDonald’s outlets say the ban has hurt business while banners are vital marketing tools.

Joanne Walker painted a school wall at Oakwood Windsor Elementary with figures from children's books. Principal Sharon Cagle funded the project at a Junior Women's Club auction and oversaw the design featuring Wind in the Willows Froggie and Clifford from Clifford the Big Red Dog among others.

Budget Tussle Begins At Aiken County Schools

The Aiken County Public School District faces a 1.5 million shortfall in preliminary operating budgets for next year. Expenditures are projected at 84.08 million with revenue around 82.54 million, compared to 1994 95 revisions.
