Welfare programs boost Aiken County economy says DSS chief
Virgil L. Conrad, new director of the Department of Social Services, told the Rotary Club of Aiken that January welfare funds totaling 660000 spurred about 2.6 million in county activity using a fourfold multiplier. He estimated the DSS injects nearly 400 million into South Carolina’s economy yearly and defended welfare against myths about cash aid, highlighting the program’s role for families, the elderly, and the handicapped. He outlined future goals like welfare reform and better foster-parent support while stressing public accountability for the agency.
