South Carolina lawmakers introduced House Bill 4033 and Senate Bill 565 to stiffen penalties for unsafe driving in work zones. The proposals, prompted by the March 13 deaths of two DOT workers, would create endangerment of a highway worker as a new offense with penalties up to 10 years for fatal collisions. The measures target all roadside workers including DOT, law enforcement, and firefighters.

A columnist examines Donald Trump’s harsh governing style and his demand that the Republican majority pass the American Health Care Act. It notes intra party rifts, the Freedom Caucus push for full repeal, and the rush to enact reform despite doubts about viability.
The letter argues that in a self governing society individual medical choices must yield to public funded care. It contends the Republican plan benefits only the rich and that access to care is the priority over personal choice. The writer urges support for universal public medical provisions.
