Hemp Seminar Row Tests West Virginia Guard

National Guardsman Rodger Belknap of Gassaway sued after Maj. Gen. Skaff canceled a contract to rent an armory to hemp advocates. US District Judge John Copenhaver Jr. ruled the deal stands, citing the contract and First Amendment rights. Hemp is a plant used for rope and fiber but is related to marijuana.

Barnes To Draw Up Funds Pruning List

Aiken County Council rejected across the board cuts and instead pursued budget savings through 18 motions on capital cuts and revenue ideas. County Administrator W Scott Barnes was to prepare a pruning list targeting about 666000 in current savings and 15 million next year, while warnings of 26 to 27 potential job cuts were shared in executive session. The meeting left open possible cutbacks across nearly 60 departments as the deficit tops 5 percent of a 21 million dollar budget. Chairman Carrol H Warner said balancing funds would require about eight mills in taxes but denied any tax increase.

Mead Hall first graders mail Easter cards to soldiers abroad

Mead Hall first graders in Aiken sent Easter cards with baby blue eggs and pink bunnies to soldiers in Saudi Arabia. Teacher Becky W Geeting said about 30 local families had relatives in the war and students wrote letters and messages to assure troops they are not forgotten.

GNP Report Bolsters Bush View

The Commerce Department revised fourth quarter GNP to a 1.6 percent decline, less severe than prior estimates. Strong trade boosted activity by 37.7 billion, while exports rose and imports fell, supporting hopes the recession may end by midyear and growth resume in spring.

Aiken Sulky Races Set With 42 Entries At Mile Track

First-time spectators learn pacers pull a sulky while trotters move opposite leg pairs. A field of 42 horses is listed for the Aiken Mile Track event on Banks Mill Road starting at 1 p.m. Gates open at 10 a.m. The program names 10 races from City of Aiken to Minniear Memorial, with pacers and trotters in multiple age groups and several sponsors.
