New Winthrop President Sees Education Hope at 100th Year
New Winthrop College will gain new president Kime Piper who takes office June 2 after leaving the University of Houston Victoria. Piper says the main challenge is funding and declining enrollment, but cites Winthrop’s traditions, faculty, and alumni as strengths. She replaces Phil Lader, who left to run for governor. Newberry defends campus purchasing audits as resolved and says the school remains above reproach.

Prison Funding Authorization Approved in South Carolina
The South Carolina House approved a funding package for construction of three prisons over five years by a 91 to 0 vote. The bill authorizes 9 million dollars through a mix of capital funds and general obligation bonds, downsizing from a proposed five-prison plan. Rep. Robert Sheheen urged delaying five-prison expansion, suggesting overcrowding relief may come from two wooden barracks and the omnibus crime bill, reducing immediate needs.
